Helmets on the Road

What a helmet is supposed to do

Great helmets do allow you to ride further. They do this in several different ways. All the while, you hopefully aren’t noticing anything at all.

1. A great helmet is light. A lighter helmet is going to prevent fatigue and prevent you from compensating in other places than your neck. A great helmet will be so light, you will forget it is even on. This is a good sign.

2. The more ventilation, the more you can release heat. When your body is able to regulate your temperature (especially on super hot days), you can ride longer, faster and more confidently. This (theoretically) will also allow for more enjoyment.

3. As helmets are considered “better”, the fit becomes more exacting. Someone who is going to put a lot of miles on their bike should be more concerned about fit because of overall comfort. But, more importantly, the helmet will protect your head better if it fits properly.

We love Giro helmets for the road. The prices are the same as every other brand, but we feel that they do an especially good job with the fit and function aspects.
