I have a similar story. I thought working on the bike might restore the romance. I gave it a good cleaning and lube, but no. Looking at it I was always reminded of that empty bike rack and the sinking feeling in my stomach.

Try taking this concept to a new level. Give the bike a completly new personality. If it is a mountain bike, turn it into a dirt jumper or a single speed. Maybe the new project will bring back the love.

You could try a Native American smudging ceremony. It involves the burning of sage, cedar, and sweetgrass. Years ago, my very spiritual roommate smudged our house after a traumatic burglary. We felt uncomfortable being there knowing that strangers' grubby hands had gone through our underwear drawers, closets, kitchen cabinets, etc. There was definitely a negative cloud over the place. I'm not really into spirit magic, but even I agreed that the house felt cleansed afterward. And it smelled good.
