Chain of Fools aka Which Chain?

Chains come in 2 basic sizes. These sizes are called one eighth (1/8″) and three thirty seconds (3/32″). Most geared bikes come with a 3/32″ set up, while most single speeds come set up as 1/8″. When converting your bike, it can get confusing. Here is a chart to keep things straight.

1/8″ Chain will work on both 1/8″ and 3/32″ cogs and chainrings. Pretty much all of it.
These chains don’t flex as much (typically) as a 3/32″ chain, making it more difficult to derail. It also makes them last a bit longer.

3/32″ Chain will work only on 3/32″ cogs and chainrings.
These chains are usually made for 6, 7 and 8 speed bikes. They work for single speeds, but not quite as well as a 1/8″ chain.

We don’t sell any 3/32″ single speed specific chains.
