Track/Fixed

Can I convert my bike to a fixie?

We get asked all the time about whether a bike can be converted to single speed. Most of the time it is yes. The basic reason a bike works for single speed or for fixed gear is if the drop out (where the rear wheel attaches) has room for the wheel to slide back and forth. If there is room to move the axle of the hub, then we can set you up very effectively for not a great deal of money. If you are thinking of buying a frame, but aren’t sure if it will work, bring the frame by or send us a photograph. We’ll let you know.

There are other options if you have a newer style of drop out, but that can get kind of expensive. Usually, you are looking at about $120 more to get things done right.

Chris at Generic Cycles can do a superb job of changing out your drop outs to track ends if you are interested. His charges are reasonable and he knows what he is doing.
